Pints & Purls monthly knitting and needle work group! We are co-sponsoring a free, monthly knitting group that meets the third Tuesday of the month from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Green Town Tavern, an independently owned pub at 110 S. Genessee Street, Waukegan, IL 60085.
I don't know how to sew or knit- can I still come? Sure! All skill levels are welcome!
What do most people bring to a knitting group? All kinds of smaller, portable projects. Good examples include knit/crochet hats, socks, scarves, baby items; quilt squares, embroidery/needlework or anything you want to try.
What should I buy to get started knitting? Scarves are a great starting project since it doesn't matter about fit or guage (how tight or loosely you knit). Most beginning knitters should buy a nice set of wooden knitting needles since they aren't as slippery as metal or plastic ones. Size 7 or 8 is a good medium choice that works with most worsted weight yarn. Red Heart acrylic is the most affordable but a good wool/acrylic mix handles well, such as Lion Brand Wool-Ease which is affordable and nice. 2 skeins tops should be plenty for a scarf. Get a small makeup zipper bag to store scissors, big plastic needle (for weaving in ends), needle tip protectors (for holding your project in place) and tape measure. As you gain more experience, you can branch out to even more cool gadgets like: guage/needle sizer, stitch markers, crochet hook, row counter (can also use free apps on your smartphone), and cable needles.
Green Town Tavern features a full menu of appetizers, entrees, craft beers, beers on tap, wines, mixed drinks, and non-alcoholic options. Pints & Purls is about creativity- the only regulations are we don't do mending, tailoring, or repairs and no outside food or drink in the pub. We also recommend folks be age 21 and up. We look forward to seeing you there!
